Asme B40100 Download: A Guide to Pressure Gauges and Gauge Attachments

Pressure gauges are instruments that measure and display the pressure of a fluid or gas in a system. They are widely used in various industries, such as oil and gas, power generation, chemical, pharmaceutical, and aerospace. Pressure gauges can help monitor the performance, safety, and efficiency of a system.

However, not all pressure gauges are created equal. There are different types, designs, specifications, and standards for pressure gauges and their attachments. One of the most important standards for pressure gauges is ASME B40.100, which covers analog, dial-type gauges that use elastic elements to sense pressure and indicate it by means of a pointer moving over a graduated scale.

In this article, we will explain what ASME B40.100 is, what it covers, why it is important, and how you can download it from the official ASME website.

What is ASME B40.100?

ASME B40.100 is an American National Standard that was developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). ASME is a professional organization that sets codes and standards for engineering practice and public safety.

ASME B40.100 was first published in 1955 as a revision of an earlier standard from 1925. Since then, it has been revised several times to reflect the advances in technology and industry needs. The latest edition of ASME B40.100 was published in 2022 and replaces the previous edition from 2013.

ASME B40.100 provides the minimum requirements for the design, construction, installation, calibration, testing, and maintenance of pressure gauges and gauge attachments. It also includes definitions, terminology, symbols, units, classifications, accuracy grades, environmental conditions, markings, dimensions, materials, performance characteristics, safety precautions, and quality assurance.

What does ASME B40.100 cover?

ASME B40.100 covers pressure gauges that have a dial size of at least 1.5 inches (38 mm) and a pressure range of at least 15 psi (103 kPa). It also covers the following attachments that are installed between the pressure source and the gauge:

  • Diaphragm seals: devices that isolate the pressure element from the process fluid by means of a flexible diaphragm.

  • Snubbers: devices that reduce the effects of pressure pulsations or shocks on the gauge.

  • Pressure limiting valves: devices that limit the maximum pressure applied to the gauge.

ASME B40.100 does not cover gauges of special configuration designed for specific applications, edge reading gauges, deadweight or piston gauges, other gauges not using an elastic element to sense pressure, diaphragm actuated pressure instruments that employ mechanical linkages to transmit the applied pressure, other attachments such as siphons, electric contacts, and gauge isolation valves or other separation devices designed to protect the pressure element assembly.

Why is ASME B40.100 important?

ASME B40.100 is important because it ensures that pressure gauges and gauge attachments are reliable, accurate, consistent, and safe. By following ASME B40.100 standards,

  • You can select the appropriate type and grade of gauge for your application.

  • You can install and operate the gauge correctly and prevent damage or injury.

  • You can calibrate and test the gauge periodically to maintain its accuracy and performance.

  • You can troubleshoot any problems or failures that may occur with the gauge or its attachments.

ASME B40.100 also helps you comply with regulatory requirements and industry best practices. Many jurisdictions and organizations adopt or reference ASME B40.100 as part of their codes or specifications for pressure measurement devices. e0e6b7cb5c
